My take on E3 2013 – Wii U, PS4, Xbox One
I must say, I don’t feel like I missed out on anything major by not attending E3 this year. Maybe the opportunity to mingle with the hotties (ladies) and pick up some exclusive E3 merchandise but on the gaming side…continue after the break to read what I enjoyed most about E3 and what I didn’t enjoy.
Mario Kart 8 – Nintendo Wii U
At first glance I wasn’t too pleased with Mario Kart 8’s trailer. It looked way too familiar to Mario Kart 7 on the 3DS. Then, as I continued to watch videos on actual live demos, the game started to look real good. The new addition of Gravity-free is welcomed to an already tried and true formula. I like it because it looks futuristic and reminds me of hover crafts, which are awesome. Also, the more I viewed demos of Mario Kart 8, the more I realized how nice it looks graphically…I mean real nice. This one went from a pass to an insta-buy…it just took a few more video plays for me to warm up to it.
Final Fantasy XV for PS4
Final Fantasy XV is a game that I want to add to my collection and less a game I actually want to play. The game looks amazing and the game play seems to be more streamlined with real-time combat instead of the traditional JRPG Turn-based battle system. Final Fantasy XV looks like a true to form Final Fantasy game. Rather than a mistakenly awful attempt to, I don’t know, try to please fans with a half-step series like Final Fantasy XIII / 1,2,3…they’re taking a leap forward in the series like when FFVII came out. In other words, a game that’ll catch the attention of everyone and not just Final Fantasy fans. I’m looking forward to this one.
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U & 3DS
Super Smash Bros. is the series that all gamers speak about and for that alone makes this a must-buy. The game looks awesome on the Wii U and with the announcement of Mega Man being added to the roster makes Super Smash Bros. on the Wii U/3DS a collector’s item. Before we were finally shown footage of gameplay and a trailer, I honestly thought we would be able to cross play between 3DS and Wii U. Sadly, this is not the case…so now I’m like, “Then why announce Smash Bros for the Wii U and 3DS?” It makes less sense to have the SAME game released on both systems and for the opportunity to play match up online play between the two slip away. You can transfer character upgrades between the two systems…that about it I though. Also, DLC….where is the DLC? With a game this large and with a roster this epic, DLC is written ALL over it. I’m hoping Nintendo makes all our dreams come true and announces DLC for Super Smash Bros Wii U/3DS. That would make the possibilities for this game endless and the added character roster could be INSANELY awesome. For now, we only have Mega Man’s awesome presence to look forward to. They did an excellent job in the trailer to introduce Mega Man and as my brother said, “Nintendo showin’ Capcom how to represent a true mascot!” ain’t that the truth.
Xbox One…dot, dot, dot
The console everyone is so upset about but will still end up purchasing. Listen, it’s been done for years. Large companies put out a product that THEY want you to purchase and you WILL purchase it. HDTVs, 4KTVs, Apple products, cars, you name it. You may be upset that it’s not what you REALLY want, or maybe it is what you want but well, to each their own. Just Google Xbox One to read all about it.
PS4…the winner by majority
With a sales pitch that makes sense, $100s less than Xbox One & currently only $50s more than the 32GB Wii U Deluxe, momentum is already on their side. That price is a real sweet spot with what the PS4 offers. Pre-orders are thru the roof because of that price point. At $500 it would have been a “Which is better? PS4 or Xbox One?” at $600 it would have been a “I’m going with the Xbox One instead type of talk” but at $400??? Talk about a win for gaming. That’s all I have to say about the PS4. Price.
Bayonetta 2 – Wii U
Oh Bayonetta 2 how we love thee. For a game that should have came out in 2013 we still have to wait until 2014 to play you. That is completely unfair and to sum up Nintendo in a nutshell, “You guys really should have waited a whole year to release the Wii U”. Either than that, the game looks AWESOME and I really can’t wait to play it. The graphics look amazing, again, wishing it had already been out this year, it could have shown the great capabilities that the Wii U has to offer and swayed other third party companies to invest more AAA games for the Wii U. As for now, we have to wait until late this year and whatever next year brings to see what type of life Wii U has in it. I’d like to see the Wii U sell like hotcakes but who is to know if sales will ever reach the level of Wii let alone the PS3 & 360. Same goes for the PS4 and Xbox One. Also, who is to know if Wii U will ever attract the big dogs in gaming when it comes to more third-party retail games support or if it will continue to be overlooked in favor of PS4 and Xbox One.
Which brings me to my next point. These game developers are playing it safe. They have been for years now. Sequels with very little change to gameplay and experience? *check* Annual releases to cash cow franchises? *check* Releasing games like Watch Dogs, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Diablo III, Madden 25, NBA2K14, FIFA Soccer 14, Destiny, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag on current gen & next gen consoles? *check* Wait a minute….Do you get the effen point I”m trying to make here? What incentive are they giving us to invest in next gen systems if the same damn games are being released on current gen systems? Oh, I know that they can’t overlook the high budget spending on these “AAA” games they develop so releasing these games on just about every console makes financial sense. It gives them a better opportunity to break even or make a profit. It also takes away from the allure from these next gen consoles. And these games that could have been released exclusively for next gen are ruined by releasing on 7 year old hardware. The consumer is being suckered into buying crap if you ask me. You buy new tech to experience new tech. When they have you buying “new” tech with a pitch that it delivers never before seen material and then turn right around and say “Also available on old-ass hardware you already own” it’s a slap in the face if you ask me.
X – Monolith Software, Inc. – Wii U
The title only known as “X” at the moment looks like a great journey to experience. This one right here is one I’m looking forward to as well, a lot. Like Final Fantasy XV, I’m more excited about owning this title rather than actually playing it. It’s just one of those rare gems that you want to add to your collection and be like “I own it”. Not to mention that Wiii U NEEDS more titles like this. I mean A LOT more…the Wii U needs more effen games that show off how beautiful the graphics can be and how large the worlds are. It needs more in depth 3D games filled with action, explosions, huge mechs, amazing back drops and set pieces, and less side scrollers y’all.
Dead Rising 3
Dead Rising 3 exclusively on the Xbox One is a complete let down from Capcom. What the heck where you thinking Capcom? You should pull a “Wii U” and screw Xbox One and announce that Dead Rising 3 is now being released on Wii U and PS4 as well. Xbox One does not deserve ANY third-party exclusives, NONE. Will I buy an Xbox One just for Dead Rising 3? No. Would I buy an Xbox One just to play Dead Rising 3? Yes. Should anyone buy a $500 piece of hardware for only one purchase? Absolutely not. This is why Dead Rising 3 should be released on all other consoles because it’s a game I’m looking forward to but NOT on the Xbox One. Dead Rising 3 won’t save the Xbox One from being a complete fail & if Dead Rising 3 wasn’t coming out on the Xbox One I wouldn’t care if Xbox One got cancelled and never sees a release date. No other game on the Xbox One is even on my radar.
Quick mention, I thought Destiny looked cool ’cause I was like “I finally get to play Halo on my Playtation!” but it seems that my bros aren’t really feeling it. Nonetheless here’s a video:
That’s about it you guys. My brother and I were really close in actually making a trip to Los Angeles for E3 2013 but chose not to instead. Next year we’ll plan it out better and make a trip to L.A to experience all the new releases first hand. Which announcements got you excited?
